Companion Card Western Australia

Reach the official WA Companion Card program, prepare an application and use the affiliate directory to plan a visit.

Independent informationUpdated

Official program: Companion Card WA. The WA program is funded by the Western Australian Government through the Department of Communities and administered by National Disability Services. Accessible Australia is separate from that program.

The right starting point for WA

If you live in Western Australia, use the official WA site for eligibility, applications and card enquiries. Older links to this domain may relate to historical Companion Card information. The current WA program is at wacompanioncard.org.au. We do not collect applications or hold cardholder records.

WA’s published criteria cover residence, significant permanent disability, the need for attendant care to participate in most community activities and the lifelong nature of that need. The complete wording matters. Read the official eligibility page before preparing an application, including the separate guidance linked there for young children.

Preparing an application

The official WA application page links to its current form and describes the supporting material required. It also offers a route to request an accessible Word version if you use a screen reader or other assistive technology. Use that current page instead of a PDF downloaded from an older third-party address.

Read all the instructions before arranging photographs or an appointment. Check which health professionals or service providers can complete the relevant section. Prepare clear examples of the support you need during community activities, and ask the professional to use the questions on the form to guide the information they provide.

Keep a copy of what you submit and use the current official contact details for progress enquiries. The official page provides processing guidance; actual timing can change. Only the program can assess the application or tell you about a particular file.

Finding a participating WA venue

The WA affiliate directory lets you search participating businesses and activities. Use it to build a shortlist around your interests and location. Then contact the chosen operator to confirm acceptance for the activity, how the companion ticket is booked and which access facilities are available.

For a Perth outing or a regional journey, think through the complete route: arrival, the activity, facilities and the trip home. Do not treat the presence of a business in the directory as a guarantee that every room, tour or temporary event is suitable for your needs.

Travel and transport

Confirm transport arrangements with the operator of each service. If your journey involves several providers, ask each one about its own ticketing and assistance process. Keep accessible transport confirmations alongside venue bookings, and allow for rest stops or a change of plan on longer regional trips.

For accommodation, ask about the actual room you would book, rather than relying on a general property description. Our hotel questions guide can help you get specific answers. A Companion Card venue listing does not establish that accommodation or other travel expenses are included.

Help with an existing card

The official WA site includes information on renewal, lost or damaged cards and how to contact the program. Use those channels when your details change or you need a replacement. If you have a booking while waiting for a card, ask the venue what evidence it can accept and verify the program’s advice.

For everyday booking steps, read using a Companion Card. For a different state, start from the official program list.
